April 28, 2012

Today is March 23rd. Today is Ugadi aka Chaitra Suddha Padyham, Sauramanaor Chandramana, a Hindu New Year. Today the Telugu people celebrate New Year, celebrated only in Karnataka (Bangalore specific), Maharastra and Andhra Pradesh states. There are not many (if any) Telugu people in Goa.
Today, all started normally in Margao with streets jammed with traffic as everyone struggled to the 10 am start of work. About 11 o’clock things started to quieten down as an exodus started; by 12 the town was deserted, just at the time we’d decided to shopping, pay the electric bill etc.
It seems that the people of Goa don’t have enough time out (only five holidays in the last 6 weeks) and someone decided on the spur of the moment to celebrate Ugadi, despite the fact that no-one we’ve asked knows what Ugadi is.
We’ll have to now work whether The North Indian Hindu New Year is and Southern Tamil Hindu New Year is and whether we should place bets on whether Goa will celebrate these. Planning is sometimes very difficult here.
